Yussef Cole ON life, death and Cyberpunk 2077
Yussef Cole is a writer and artist living in New England. Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic, he and his partner, a psychoanalyst, have been thinking and writing about death and our relation to it. Games, which often feature death prominently in their mechanics, can be an excellent vehicle with which to study how we think about death, and the ways in which we try to avoid and repress it. Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that challenges many of the cemented-in notions games have about death; it asks us to embrace death, to make something out of our brief lives, and to find the kind of immortality that exists only in legend and stories.
Margaret Robertson ON Japan's paper play pioneers
Margaret first visited Japan as a staff writer for Edge magazine in the 2000s, covering Nintendo, Square and TGS. After leaving printed media, and pursuing a career making games in the UK and US, she returned to Japan last year as a full-time resident and co-founder of Cabbage Systems, a Tokyo-based studio. Real Japan, of course, is not – or at least is only partly – Japan in videogames.
